In the spirit of positive resolutions, we’ve added a new product line to our shelves at ananda: Nioxin. With this concept of family in mind, I would like to share the story of Fatie Atkinson, one of the generous participants who donated hair at our Locks of Love Event in August. Locks of love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the US and Canada suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Locks of love uses donated ponytails to create and provide the highest quality prosthetics for these children, hoping to contribute a sense of self-confidence and normalcy to their lives.

Each of our participants arrived at the studio with love and compassion in their hearts, but Fatie’s intentions were unique: he wanted to donate his hair in honor of his two year old daughter, Maddox, who was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma when she was two months old. After undergoing surgery and treatments that caused her to lose her hair, Maddox recovered her health and her beautiful head of blond hair. Maddox has been cancer free for a year and a half.

Fatie, who had not cut his hair since college, decided to use our Locks of Love event as an opportunity to give some comfort to a child like his daughter. Fatie’s wife Sarah, and his three children Dylan (6), Sam (5), and Maddox (2) accompanied him to the studio that day. The family was overjoyed to be together, and it was especially heart-warming to see Maddox laughing and playing while her father acted out of such love and gratitude. It was an honor to be part of such a beautiful moment for the Atkinson family, and we sincerely appreciate all of the participants, without whom the day would not have been such a success.

There is a beautiful word in the German language that is almost impossible to translate: geborgenheit. The word involves protection, warmth, closeness, peace, trust and love. Geborgenheit is a place, or a feeling associated with home, with being wrapped up in the arms of a loved one, with existing in a physical and metaphysical family. It is an experience that we all crave, and that we hope to discover, and re-discover every day. Fatie’s story is a reminder of how such a place is created, a reminder that family is what we make it, and of how lucky we are if we make it into a place of unconditional love.
